Developing the National\nOccupational Standard for Paramedics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n PAC has partnered with the CSA Group to manage the\nrenewal of the existing National Occupational Competency Profile (NOCP) and\nincorporate it into a new standard following accredited processes of the\nStandards Council of Canada \u2013 the National Occupational Standard for Paramedics\n(NOSP). Following on from our earlier updates this year, in this article we\nwill provide a further update on the development of the NOSP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Development process<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The development process is collaborative and ensures\nthe inclusion of diverse stakeholders\u2019 and end-users\u2019 views throughout the\nprocess. Each step of the six-step development model (1) is conducted in\ncollaboration between the DG and TC. The development of the NOSP is informed by\nthe principles guiding paramedicine in Canada (2) as well as emerging concepts\nin other healthcare competency frameworks (3) and will be structured according\nto the paramedic profile roles (4,5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Step 3 complete<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The contexts in which paramedics practice in Canada\nwere explored through pan-Canadian working groups. A total of 146 applicants\nwere appointed to 15 working groups in June with considerations of inclusion,\ndiversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA), including geographical\nrepresentation across Canada. The working groups have now finalized and\nsubmitted their data to the DG. In addition, the NOSP has created a patient,\npublic and caregiver engagement strategy, and engaged with Indigenous\ncommunities and paramedics. The perspectives of colleagues in other health\nprofessions have also been recorded for input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In October, Dr. Elizabeth Donnelly was appointed to\nlead a small group to identify how the principle of \u2018Healthy Professionals\u2019<\/em>\ncould and should be incorporated within the NOSP. In addition, Dr. Donnelly\nworks on behalf of the NOSP with members of the COPR project on developing\ntheir \u2018Paramedic as a person\u2019 role. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Dissemination<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The NOSP development process has been presented at a\nnumber of venues across Canada including PACE 2022 in Saskatoon, the PANB\nconference in St. John, the Ontario Base Hospital Group MAC, the Ontario\nParamedic Program Coordinators, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Next: Step 4<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The DG will now sort and code the submitted data to\nidentify potential units of work (i.e., professional activities) and the\ncompetencies required to enact such activities.
